JANUARY WAS GOOD MONTH - NOT A GREAT MONTH FOR ETT - HITS AND TIME ON SITE INCREASED BUT NUMBER OF VISTIS DECREASED
January 2012 got off to a good start at ETT. The site received 4,469,010 hits compared with 2,013,553 hits in January 2011. The 4.4 million number was slight better that the December 2011 number. So it was a another record breaking month for hits.
However all of the news was not goood. The average number visitors each day dropped from 2900/day to 2650/day. The good news is that the average stay on the site increased by 30 seconds to 10.5 minutes per visit.
Historically, the January numbers have alway been much lower than the December numbers of the previous year. This is the first year where that is not the case.
Thank you for reading ETT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MARSHALL NEWS MESSENGER FROM JOHN TENNISON, M.D.
I would like to correct the false and misleading information in an article written by Terri Richardson that appeared in the January 31, 2012 edition of the Marshall News Messenger under the headline "Hotel owners say Marshall misusing tax funds."
This article states that Mrs. Roxana Gonzales related a conversation she had with me and that "It was his professional opinion of boogie woogie impact on tourism that it's important as a historical fact for Marshall but probably will not impact tourism."
This is a total misrepresentation of a conversation I had with Mrs. Gonzales and Mr. Vinod Patel when I was a paying guest and rented two rooms for two nights at their hotel while I was in town for Omar Sharriff's memorial service and funeral.
Ms. Gonzales specifically asked me, "Was the fact of being the birthplace of Boogie Woogie enough to fill hotel rooms?" My answer to that question was that I did not know. Had she asked me, "will the Birthplace of Boogie Woogie program that is now underway have an impact on tourism," my answer would have been a resounding yes.

JEFFERSON QUILT SHOW 'QUILTS ON THE BAYOU' - JANUARY 2012
The 9th Annual Jefferson Quilt Show Quilts on the Bayou was held on January 27-29. It was presented by the Jefferson Regional Quilt Alliance and the Jeffersonian Institute. Over 90 quilts were display including 45 from the Hoffmans 2011 Hanami Challenge Collection.
When I went to the show I expected to see quilts. I quickly realized it was more that a quilt show it was an art show. I am sure you will agree when you see the images I shot at the show.

THE MADI WALL TIME LAPSE VIDEO
Editor's note:
We schedule this video to run over a month ago. It is irontic that it is running two days after a truck damaged the wall.
Several years ago, time lapse cameras recorded the installation of the Madi Art Wall in Marshall over a period of six weeks. Using that footage, Barney Canson created an enchanting two minute video accompanied by his original musical score. The Madi Art Wall is on the west side of the Wood Building at the intersection of Lafayette and Houston streets in downtown Marshall. The wall was a gift to the city by Anna and Edmund Wood.

Fantasy Fest -- Key West -- Gallery 5
The Fantasy Fest was first held in 1979, what began as primarily a party staged to add pep to the quiet days of October soon acquired a life of its own. Tony Falcone and the late Bill Conkle, owners of Fast Buck Freddie's Department Store, along with Joe Liska and Frank Romano, who owned Key West Aloe the time, organized a party to stimulate business. The ten day celebration now includes balls, costume competitions, AIDS fundraisers, body painting, drag queen contests, costume parties, lots of drinking, as well as pet and neighborhood parades for the whole family. Fantasy Fest has grown to rival New Orleans' Mardi Gras as an event drawing out-of-towners.
These are photos from the event.

Hotel owners say Marshall misusing tax funds
By Terri Richardson Members of the Marshall Hotel Association say they are tired of having the city turn a deaf ear to their concerns and recommendations for using and tracking Hotel Occupancy Tax funds in the city.
Association members come from 14 hotels and have chosen spokespersons Roxana Gonzales and Vinod Patel to speak in their interest.
"The hoteliers belive some of the commissioners have decided boogie woogie is a race issue, but it's really a green issue for $65,000 of HOT funds, said Patel Monday. "Even if boogie woogie can bring the races together, it's not one of the criteria for use of HOT funds."
Patel shared a one-page, two-part test that "every expenditure of hotel occupancy tax must meet to be valid" as provided through the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association.
The first criteria says: Every expenditure must directly enhance and promote tourism and the convention and hotel industry.
Tourism by this is defined as bringing visitors from outside the city, according to the resource, which adds that if the event or activity is not likely to increase hotel and convention activity then the HOT "revenues cannot be funded."
