BELLE MAISON CLUB MAKES DONATION TO MARSHALL EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Sandra Spencer, on the right, Chair of the recently formed Marshall Education Foundation, is shown accepting a $2,500 donation to the Education Foundation from Belle Maison Club treasurer Suzanne Carter. The Belle Maison Club, a local ladies study club was chartered in Marshall in 1938. The Club is long known for its support of civic, social and cultural endeavors. According to Carter, who is also an Education Foundation board member, "the members of the Belle Maison Club are pleased to make this donation in support of the students of MISD. With decreases in state and federal funding, it is imperative that we all do our part to ensure every child in Marshall receives a quality education. The Foundation is a means to ensure that the funds are utilized in our local classrooms."
The newly formed MISD Education Foundation is a non-profit organization. The Foundation is accepting donations which will be used for MISD classroom teachers and their students needs. Anyone interested in donating to the Foundation or in having a board member speak to a civic club or organization should contact Ms. Spencer by email at sspencer@etbu.edu.

50 YEARS OF STYLE AND GRACE MARK ANNUAL CHARITY HORSE SHOW
Tennessee Walking Horses -- the luxury ATV of the Old South.
Bred for comfort, endurance and style before the Civil War, Tennessee Walkers gave their passengers a smooth ride on all terrains, reaching speeds from 6 to 12 mph without breaking a sweat. Not only could keep up the pace all day long, they looked good doing it.
They still do. And this weekend, some 100 horses will bring that style and grace to the Marshall Arena for the Marshall Lions Clubs Annual Charity Horse Show on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday Feb. 25.
It's the 50th year for the free event, which benefits a number of the club's charities, including a camp for diabetic and handicapped children and three annual scholarships for local students that provide up to $2,500 in financial assistance.

CVB TO FACILITATE COMMUNITY PLANNING COUNCIL OF MARSHALL
"To share scheduled and anticipated events and activities that affect community resources or facilities is the purpose of a new community council to be formed" according to Ed Michel, Executive Director of the Marshall Convention & Visitors Bureau. The new organization is set to have its first meeting on Tuesday, February 28 at 1:30 PM in the conference room at City Hall.
"There are many organizations in the area that regularly plan events and activities throughout the year and sometimes other organizations plan events on similar dates not knowing that there might be a conflict" says Michel. "The CVB's intent is to help organizations plan and work together more. Perhaps with good open communications, several organizations can work together on projects."
The objectives of the Community Planning Council is to coordinate events and avoid conflicts when possible; maintain an ongoing 12 month or longer calendar; provide assistance or resources between organizations if applicable; and to share information.

ANOTHER LOOK AT THE WOL 2011 NUMBERS
By Ron Munden -- February 20, 2012
In the Executive Summary of the the Wonderland of Lights 2012 Post Event Report John Arend reports the following numbers:
Hotel Occupancy Tax
Net Change from Nov/Dec 2010 Off by 16.65%
Sales Tax
Net Change from Nov/Dec 2010 Increase of 7.52%
Several people have pointed out that these numbers don't accurately cover the period when WOL was in operation. They pointed out that WOL was only in operation 8 of the 30 days in November.
ETT has recalculated the numbers using a 8/30 weighting factor for November and the same raw numbers Mr. Arend used. We found:
Net Change HOT funds during WOL Off by 18.7%
Net Change Sales tax during WOL Off by 1.8%
A second area of difference is the operating loss for 2011.

THE FOREIGN SOIL BENEATH 402 SOUTH BOLIVAR STREET
By Lad Moore
Yea, what poetic letters and hallowed journals have sprouted from
these stained and revered grounds! -- Lords
~~~~~
The original structure has long been razed, but the soil beneath it remains rich with history at what is now 402 South Bolivar in Marshall, Texas. For a time, the knotty-pine floors groaned and jingled with the heavy boot and spur traffic of men coming in and out of that location. Their purpose? Maintaining an exiled government far from its native home. How could this be? What things were happening around Marshall that made her so celebrated? Why the swishes of men rushing to and from their duties? What was all the excitement about?
Early Marshall was ever prosperous, rich in cotton and timber, and boasted openly of its human resource -- having more slaves than any other county in the state. There had long been a struggle to seat the county government at the Sabine River, but the Republic of Texas eventually prevailed to place the county seat in Marshall, largely because Peter Whetstone and Isaac Van Zandt had provided free land for such use. The city was at the confluence of several important stagecoach lines and was heralded by travelers for its "lovely hilly terrain and abundant clean water." It was also lauded as "The Athens of Texas" for its several colleges, although at the time they were little more than secondary schools by true college measure.
Tourism Officials: Wonderland a Success
By: Carolyn Cerda
Marshall's largest festival was a success. That's according to tourism officials who released revenue numbers during a Convention and Visitors Bureau meeting on Friday. In fact, they say by most accounts the 25th annual event was the best ever.
Several factors played into officials coming to this conclusion. Multiple revenue increases were reported In an executive summary. For example, combined sales tax for November and December of 2012 were up 7.52 percent from 2011. Direct attraction revenues were a total $292,859.45, an increase of 62 percent from the prior year.
"The 25th anniversary of the Wonderland of Lights was a huge success on many fronts," said Co-producer, John Arend. "I think because we had so much to offer they(visitors) came from far and wide. I think everyone had a fabulous year this year and we look forward to the future."
